AQUA's Host

Our family enjoys traveling. After many years of owning Aqua, we finally decided to make it a rental property for everyone to enjoy. We look forward to your stay and welcome recommendations to improve the overall guest experience.

A Brief History of Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo

The name Zihuatanejo is a mixture of Nahuatl and Old Spanish. Zihuatlan means 'a place governed by women' in Nahuatl and ejo is a Spanish term for 'small'.

In 1965 the Mexican government identified the most desirable tourist zones for development in the country. The selected areas were Cabo San Lucas, Bay of Banderas, Puerto Escondido, Cancun, and Ixtapa / Zihuatanejo. Ixtapa was chosen for creating a fully equipped resort community and Zihuatanejo was to be the service city with a tourism component. The first hotel opened in Ixtapa in 1975 and a visit today shows the continued development.

Zihuatanejo has remained a traditional fishing village with folklore and charm of an old Mexican coastal town. In the downtown area called El Centro, the narrow cobblestone streets are populated with numerous restaurants and souvenir shops. Beside the munipial pier is Playa Principal where in the early morning, the beach turns into a lively fish market. Handcrafted treasures including gold and silver jewerly, ceramics, wooden masks, hammocks, and brightly colored textiles, all created by local artisans, can be foudn at the Mercado de Artes y Artesanias.
